Mentorship

The Garden of Dreams Foundation’s mentorship work is rooted in its Career Pathways programs – MSG Classroom, MSG4Me, Rob Carter Masterclass and the elevateHER Basketball Program – that introduce young people from our Community Based Organization partners to a wide array of careers in sports, entertainment and media.

MSG Classroom

Founded in 2007, MSG Classroom is an Emmy Award-winning educational program that teaches young people the inner workings of the sports television industry through a mentorship initiative at MSG Networks. Students selected for this program meet weekly with various professionals and learn valuable lessons about their current roles, responsibilities and career journeys. At the end of each semester, students write and produce their own shows which are filmed at MSG Networks Studios. The MSG Networks’ mentors help guide students throughout the program and maintain long-lasting relationships that go beyond the final session. Several alumni of MSG Classroom have gone on to work at MSG Networks following their college graduation.

MSG4Me

Established in 2019, MSG4Me expands on the framework implemented by MSG Classroom and pairs young people with employees across MSG Entertainment, MSG Sports and Sphere Entertainment. Each semester, a cohort of students from a Foundation Partner meet on a weekly basis to learn about the employees’ personal and professional journey. These students participate in Q&A sessions along with special hands-on experiences throughout the semester, such as visits to the MSG Training Center and pre-show backstage sessions with mentors.

Rob Carter Masterclass

In honor of Rob Carter, a beloved MSG Entertainment employee and huge supporter of Garden of Dreams, the Masterclass program strives to uphold Rob’s legacy by providing consistent academic and positive social support to youth in his hometown of the South Bronx. The program engages the same group of students throughout their middle and high school journeys by facilitating once-in-a-lifetime experiences including behind-the-scenes tours, concerts and games at Madison Square Garden, as well as workshops and mentorship that foster their overall growth.

elevateHER Basketball Program

Together with the New York Knicks and Jr. Knicks, Garden of Dreams launched the elevateHER Basketball Program in March 2022 with Foundation Partner Children’s Aid and their girls’ basketball program. The elevateHER program leverages the teachings of basketball and beyond to empower and uplift young female athletes who are often overlooked and viewed as secondary to their male counterparts. Through the program, the girls participate in twice-monthly clinics at Children’s Aid, including a focus on basketball skills and drills as well as mentorship sessions from female MSG Sports employees. The girls also take trips off-site at least once a semester to Madison Square Garden, the MSG Training Center or other MSG Entertainment venues, and at the end of the program, receive a donation including essential sports equipment.

Mentorship Testimonials
“The MSG4ME mentorship program taught me how many job opportunities [in the entertainment and sports industries] there are for people of color (POC). I truly wasn’t expecting to meet so many POC mentors, and was genuinely pleased to take in their wisdom. Seeing all these front office powerhouses has made me a lot more confident in myself. Knowing there are minorities in senior and management positions motivates me as I think about what I want to do when I get older.”
– Marcela, MSG4Me, SCAN-Harbor
“The skills I learned in MSG Classroom are still relevant to my everyday life. My public speaking skills learned from MSG Classroom got me through my master’s degree program.”
– Mario, MSG Classroom, WHEDco
“Garden of Dreams is so much more than an organization – it is truly a family! The young people that I have had the honor and privilege to mentor have no idea how much they have actually mentored me. Whatever hardship they face, they find a creative way around it, through it, or over it, and they do it with a smile! My heart is overwhelmed with pride seeing the growth of our [Garden of Dreams] young people.”
– Katelyn Gaffney, Radio City Rockette
“Being a part of the Rob Carter Masterclass has been such a great experience. I’ve gone to places I’ve never been, like Radio City, and met Knicks players and took a tour of Madison Square Garden!”
– Okyere, Rob Carter Masterclass, SCAN-Harbor
“My girls basketball team from Dyckman Heights will never forget their experience with the Garden of Dreams elevateHER program. They attended a basketball game at The Garden, met women’s college basketball players who look like them, and participated on-court for special elements. The team laughed, cried, cheered, and danced! And when they left the arena, they were so inspired and full of joy – they were beaming! Thank you, Garden of Dreams Foundation, for providing my girls with a memory that will last a lifetime.”
– Cynthia, elevateHER Basketball Program, Children’s Aid Site Director
